The Day Emanuela Disappeared

The afternoon Emanuela Orlandi disappeared began like any other for the 15-year-old Vatican citizen. On June 22, 1983, she left her family’s apartment inside Vatican City and went through Rome’s summer heat to her regular flute lesson at the Sant’Apollinare complex. After finishing her flute lesson, she was last spotted at a bus stop, talking to a few classmates and an unknown girl. She had called her sister earlier that day, telling her about a cosmetics sales job someone had spoken to her about, but her sister urged her to be cautious.

When she didn’t come home that evening, questions started pouring in about where she could have gone, and a search started not long after. Naturally, rumours and theories started about what could have happened to this spirited young girl.

Theories Around the Disappearance

While people love a mystery, they don’t like their questions not being answered and would much rather come up with their own ideas as to what happened. Early on, anonymous callers claimed she was being held by terrorists demanding the release of Mehmet Ali Ağca, the man who attempted to assassinate Pope John Paul II, while others pointed to shadowy organizations with alleged ties to intelligence agencies and organized crime.

Some theories implicated the notorious Banda della Magliana crime syndicate, suggesting the kidnapping was linked to Vatican financial scandals, while others whispered of high-ranking church officials orchestrating a cover-up to hide darker secrets. Despite what the truth might have been, people let their creativity get the best of them.

Start of the Investigation and False Leads

When the case had just started, the Police treated the case as a typical runaway, advising the family to wait before launching a full search, which delayed crucial early efforts. Soon, tons of anonymous phone calls and supposed sightings poured in, with callers using pseudonyms like “Pierluigi” and “Mario” giving unverifiable details about Emanuela’s whereabouts and referencing the Avon cosmetics job offer she had mentioned to her sister, information that was not yet public, giving credibility to the tips.

Investigators even tracked down a dark green BMW linked to one of the reported sightings, only to hit a wall when the car’s trail went cold and key leads evaporated. Meanwhile, the family received a letter purportedly from Emanuela herself, but handwriting experts and Police soon suspected it was a hoax, further muddying the waters. As this case went on, there was a web of false leads leading authorities to get confused about the truth. Speculation from the public didn’t help much, as they all had their ideas of what happened.

The Family’s Relentless Search

The family’s determination to find the young girl was like no other and was mainly led by her brother, Pietro. The Orlandi family has chased every possible lead, from anonymous letters and mysterious phone calls to tips pointing toward hidden corners of the Vatican itself.

Despite enduring a parade of false leads, public speculation, and emotional setbacks, the family’s resolve has only grown stronger, fueled by the belief that the truth is still out there.

The Cryptic Note Arrives

After years of not finding any answers, the Orlandi family’s lawyer, Laura Sgro, received an anonymous letter in March of 2019. The message pointed investigators toward the Vatican’s Teutonic Cemetery, hinting that the key to Emanuela’s fate might lie hidden within its ancient tombs. The note included a photo of a marble angel statue above a tomb in the Vatican’s Teutonic Cemetery and the message: “If you want to find Emanuela, search where the angel is looking.”

Acting on this anonymous tip, Vatican officials and the Orlandi family oversaw opening two tombs belonging to 19th-century German princesses. Sgro said she thought it was “necessary that this be done as the remains of the two princesses have to be confirmed.”

The Opening of the Tombs

On July 11, 2019, forensic experts, Vatican police, and family representatives gathered as two 19th-century tombs were opened. The tombs, believed to hold the remains of Princess Sophie von Hohenlohe and Duchess Charlotte Frederica of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, were unsealed in hopes that the truth would be revealed.

To the surprise of everyone, both tombs were completely empty, with no trace of the princesses, Emanuela, or even any human remains. “The search had a negative result,” said Alessandro Gisotti, interim director of the Vatican press office. “No human remains or funeral urns were found.”

Further Excavations and Bone Fragments

Following the empty tombs, investigators discovered two ossuaries (bone depositories) beneath a stone manhole nearby. They were quickly sealed off so they could be opened in the presence of forensic experts, and what they found was far beyond what anyone expected. Thousands of bones and bone fragments belonged to dozens of individuals, both adults and minors.

However, initial analyses concluded that none of the bones dated later than the end of the 19th century, ruling out any direct connection to Emanuela’s disappearance in 1983.

The Vatican’s Response and Ongoing Secrecy

Despite years of official denials, Vatican authorities recently confirmed the existence of a confidential file on Emanuela’s case, acknowledging that the dossier had been kept secret even as her family pressed for transparency. While the Vatican’s chief prosecutor now claims to have “collected all the evidence available” and has shared leads with Rome prosecutors, the contents of the secret file remain undisclosed, and the Vatican insists on maintaining confidentiality.

The Holy See claimed that they have “always shown attention and closeness to the suffering of the Orlandi family,” but the family is still left with unanswered questions.

A Case That Won’t Rest

Even after nearly four decades, the disappearance of Emanuela Orlandi refuses to fade from public consciousness, remaining one of Italy’s most enduring and haunting mysteries. For the Orlandi family, the search has been a long and painful one filled with false hope and hopelessness. With documentaries, books, and articles still circulating, one thing is certain: the public won’t rest until they find the answers they are looking for.
