Researchers believe that whoever constructed this may have had advanced masonry skills much earlier than any civilization we know, perhaps as far back as the last Ice Age. If that is the case, it totally rewrites what we know about early humans.
Natural Forces or Age-old Engineering?
But then comes the really strange part. The scientists are suggesting that this building wasn’t constructed by man initially—it was initially a natural lava hill, which later became an engineered monument.

He went on to say there is no sign of tool marks, carvings, or dwelling evidence—usually required evidence to demonstrate human intervention.

Bill Farley, another Southern Connecticut State University archaeologist, shared similar skepticism. He acknowledged the radiocarbon dates as genuine, but said the soil layers contained no typical indicators of human presence—no bones, no charcoal, no artifacts.
He believes natural geological processes are the safer bet. In short, the rock formation is impressive, but perhaps not constructed by humans, nor as unique as we thought.
Dr. Natawidjaja Calls for Further Research
To this criticism, Dr. Natawidjaja remains receptive. He’s even invited foreign researchers to Gunung Padang openly to conduct their own studies.
“We are really open to researchers from all over the world,” he stated, reframing the criticism not as a challenge, but as an invitation to more collaborative research.
In the meantime, the co-editor of the journal has verified that an investigation into the paper is under way.
