Argentina’s Highest Court Uncovers 80 Boxes of Nazi Documents in Basement

History can have some surprising twists now and then and give us a real glimpse into what the times might have been like. Argentina’s Supreme Court has uncovered more than 80 boxes filled with Nazi-era documents and propaganda materials in its basement, where they had been stored since 1941. This find, described by the court as being of “global significance,” is now under thorough examination to determine what new insights it might reveal about the Holocaust and the international networks of Nazi financing.

Where These Boxes Came From

The 80-plus came from the German embassy in Tokyo and were shipped to Argentina in 1941. They arrived aboard the Japanese steamship Nan-a-Maru on June 20 that year, packed as diplomatic cargo. The German embassy had initially classified the contents as “personal” belongings. However, concerns over the materials potentially compromising Argentina’s neutrality during World War II led to their seizure and storage in the Supreme Court’s basement.

These crates remained unopened and forgotten for over eight decades until their recent rediscovery during archival relocation efforts.

Historical Context and Initial Confiscation

During World War II, Argentina maintained a official neutrality policy, rooted in a long-standing tradition dating back to the 19th century. Despite pressures from the United States and other Allied powers, Argentina sought to preserve its neutral stance to avoid entanglement in the conflict and protect its geopolitical and economic interests. This neutrality was complicated by the presence of a large German immigrant community and significant Nazi influence within the country, including financial ties and propaganda activities.

When the Nazi documents arrived in 1941 via diplomatic cargo from the German embassy in Tokyo, Argentine authorities confiscated them out of concern that their contents could jeopardize Argentina’s neutral position during the war.

Significance of the Find

This find was labeled as significant importance as it can shed new light on the Holocaust and Nazi operations in South America. The Supreme Court has initiated a thorough investigation in collaboration with Jewish organizations and Holocaust experts to analyze the contents and get a better understanding of what happened in the past. “Given the historical relevance of the find and the potential crucial information it could contain to clarify events related to the Holocaust, the president of the Supreme Court, Horacio Rosatti, ordered an exhaustive survey of all the material found,” the court said.

“The main objective is to … determine if the material contains crucial information about the Holocaust and if any clues found can shed light on aspects still unknown, such as the route of Nazi money at a global level,” it added.

Contents of the Boxes

The contents of these boxes have had everyone on the run, trying to link them together and better understand the truth. Among the items found were postcards, black-and-white photographs, and thousands of notebooks associated with the National Socialist German Workers’ Party (NSDAP) organization abroad and the German Trade Union. The boxes also contained Nazi Party membership cards from Argentina, passport-like notebooks, and documents bearing Hitler’s signature.

“Upon opening one of the boxes, we identified material intended to consolidate and propagate Adolf Hitler’s ideology in Argentina during World War II,” the court said about the find.

Involvement of Jewish Organizations

The involvement of Jewish organizations has been crucial in the examination and preservation of the Nazi documents uncovered in Argentina’s Supreme Court basement. The Supreme Court invited experts from the Buenos Aires Holocaust Museum and officials from the Argentine Israelite Mutual Association (AMIA) to participate in the opening and initial review of the boxes. The court is collaborating with the Association of Jewish Lawyers of the Argentine Republic and the local Holocaust Memorial Foundation to analyze the materials thoroughly.

This partnership aims to ensure that the documents are properly handled, digitized, and studied to uncover any crucial information related to the Holocaust, Nazi propaganda, and the global Nazi financial networks.

The Nazi Escape Networks

This discovery complements recent declassifications of over 1,800 files related to Nazi escape routes, or “rat-lines,” to South America. Argentina became a primary haven due to its large German immigrant community and the sympathetic stance of leaders like President Juan Perón, who helped provide false passports and new identities to fleeing Nazis. These ratlines were informal but well-organized escape routes that passed through countries like Spain and Italy before reaching South America.

The documents found may offer new insights into how these networks operated, including the financing and coordination that allowed high-ranking Nazi officials and war criminals to evade justice and establish new lives in countries like Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay.

Preservation and Digitization Efforts

The court, under the direction of Chief Justice Horacio Rosatti, prioritized the preservation of these documents at all costs. Following the formal opening of several boxes in early May 2025, the materials were secured for classification, documentation, and preservation to prevent further deterioration. Experts from the Buenos Aires Holocaust Museum and other specialized institutions are collaborating closely with judicial authorities to scan and digitize the thousands of items found in the boxes.

Unanswered Questions and Future Research

While this discovery was extremely important and can give future researchers great insight into what happened in the past, there are still many unanswered questions. Future research will focus on tracing connections between the documents and known Nazi escape routes, financial transactions, and propaganda campaigns. Scholars hope to identify any links to individuals or organizations that facilitated Nazi operations or harboring in Argentina.

Changing The Theories of the Past

This trove, combined with the recent declassification of thousands of related government files, provides researchers and historians with unprecedented access to evidence of Nazi networks that enabled war criminals to evade justice. The transparency fostered by these revelations under President Javier Milei’s administration marks a critical step toward accountability, potentially aiding legal and moral reckoning for victims and their descendants.
